Ah I know what you're thinking, how could anyone still watch Survivor? Well, since the days of Richard Hatch, I've long weaned off Survivor (cept' for the one with that cute Elisabeth Filarski in it, but that was a looong time ago when I still had time for tee-vee). But this Survivor is a little different... its the lezzie version. Even so, I haven't quite followed much of it... its on Friday nights for pete's sake, who's home on Friday nights? While Survivor has had its fair share of openly gay contestants, lesbian castaways have always been somewhat missing or at least invisible (Don't quote me on this, not a Survivor fan). Well not this time, two, yes count em' two, out and about lesbians running around half dressed and marooned on a deserted isle. (Control your thoughts now...) Not having been much a Survivor fan, I missed most of the hot lezzie action... but watched those key episodes (the whole of 3 I think and enough to see Ami go "I love my girl" during some challenge). So neither Ami nor Scout (that's the two lesbians on the show for those of you who aren't tuned in) won the title of Survivor, it was good enough for me to know they were on the friggin' show. Sure, more lesbians on reality tee-vee may not count as a huge achievement, but in an industry where lesbians are often confined to invisibility or at best minor, two-dimensional characters, it was nice to know that on a show which somehow continues to command a large viewership, Ami and Scout were given equal visibility that allowed them to not only not hide their sexual orientation but challenge inaccurate stereotypes and present themselves and their way or living and having relationships as both complex and beautiful. That's something to smile about, even if they didn't win the million buckeroos. Or maybe with lesbians and by extension the creation of controversy, ratings go up (see even non-Survivor fans like moi caught a few episodes). Even so, a human face (and Ami's pretty hot mind you) has been put on lesbianism and it's always a good thing for people to know that lesbians aren't green with horns on their head.
What's Playing Now: Belle and Sebastian's If She Wants Me
Am not a big fan of TV, and only caught the recent episode of Survivor.
ReplyDeleteI still prefer my Da Vinci Code. :)
I'm not a Survivor fan either but its probably the only lezzie action I'll see on our local tee-vee so I guess I'll just have to make do... what's with anonymous anyways? I won't bite (not in a bad or unhygenic way at least)...
ReplyDeleteThis makes me sooooo want to plonk u on a chair infront of my laptop and watch Better Than Chocolate till you cry...hah...
ReplyDeleteReason why I put myself as anonymous is because knowledge is power, and a name is the key to that knowledge. I also think I know you from somewhere in my past, vague though it may be. I wasn't sure if it was you until I came to your blog. You should have seen my jaw drop when I realised that you're none other than the Nicole Kidman fan, Cheryl Chan .
Nicole Kidman fan? She's alright, a little pastey but alright... and yes you're right knowledge is power and its fine either way, this blog was merely meant to reflect some thoughts I had... you know me I don't know you, its fine. Thanks for reading anyways.
ReplyDeleteAll right, all right. I relent! *sigh*
ReplyDeleteI don't know if you remember me - it's Antoinette here. *waits for you to not remember*
Remember those long assed conversations on the phone till 4am?
